In Room 1 you met the kind of AI you talk to. But that's just one cousin. Most AI doesn't talk at all — it quietly decides, spots, and sorts things without you noticing, all day long. Let's meet the whole family.

Why this matters: If you think “AI = chatbot,” you’ll miss all the AI already around you — picking your videos, unlocking your phone, catching spam.

What just happened

Most AI never says a word.

Only two of those six talk or make things — the chatbot and the picture-maker. The other four just quietly decide, recognize, sort, and recommend. That's the part people forget: AI was choosing your videos and catching your spam for years before chatbots showed up. "AI" is a whole family, not one robot.

For your grown-up Ask your kid: "Which one surprised you?" Most kids assume AI = the chatbot. Recognizing that recommender feeds, face unlock, and spam filters are also AI is the first step to noticing how much of it they already use every day — and to asking who decided how it behaves.

Why this matters: Sorting AI into groups gives you a map — so any new AI you meet, you can place it and guess what it’s really doing.

Why this matters

AI is the whole family — not just the chatbot.

We'll spend the most time on the two you'll actually use — the kind you talk to and the kind that makes pictures. Those are the ones you'll use for homework, art, and questions. But "AI" was never only the chatbot — it's all of this. And here's the big thing they share: every one of them learned from a pile of examples that people picked. If the pile is uneven, the AI comes out uneven too. That's the next big idea — Room 4: is AI fair?

For your grown-up This room exists to keep us honest: the site is called "LearnAI," but it deliberately goes deep on generative AI (chatbots and image generators) because that's what kids touch. Naming the rest of the family — and noting that bias can live in any of it — is how we avoid pretending "AI" means only ChatGPT.
